Junior Butterflies
Participation requirements...
Junior Butterfly sailboat racing at Lake Lotawana is open to any person 16 years of age or younger living at Lake Lotawana who can find a Butterfly to sail. (Grandchildren of residents are considered residents.) Races are held each Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at the north end of Lake Lotawana.
The Butterfly sailboat is a nationally recognized sailing fleet with hundreds of boats sailing, principally, in the Central United States. It is an excellent boat for people who are new to sailing because of its simplicity and affordability. A good used boat can be had for around $2,000.
Sailors of all ages compete or just day sail in the Butterfly. It is 12 feet long, carries one sail and can accommodate two people under normal sailing conditions.
Lake Lotawana has hosted in recent years the National Butterfly Association national single-handed championships. In 2009 Bob Cantrell, a Lotawana native, placed third in the national regatta held here. Four Lotawana youths placed among the top five in the junior division of the same regatta.
